If you notice that on January 22nd you were not able to use the internet banking to of any of the Banks in Costa Rica, be aware that it was due to a new implementation that the Central Bank request to all Banks to start to migrate from Cuenta Cliente accounts to IBAN (International Bank Account Number). This migration is part of the first steps in order to implement this new 22 digit number.
The intention of this change implemented by the Costa Rica Central Bank is to modernize the Banking System in order to make international wires much easier. IBAN number is also used in European Banks.
Banking authorities stated that the implementation process has been successfully done and clients will not see any changes on their daily operations.
